Saturation Explained: The Secret Ingredient of Expensive Mixes
The gap between a clean amateur mix and an 'expensive' one is usually harmonic content. Saturation adds it — controlled distortion that makes sounds bigger without making them louder.
What it does
Saturation generates harmonics — new frequencies stacked musically above the source — and gently compresses peaks (soft clipping). The result reads as warmth, density and loudness even at the same meter level.
The flavors
Tape: mid warmth, soft highs, glues buses. Tube: even harmonics, flattering on vocals and bass. Digital/hard drive: aggressive edge for 808s and leads. FL's Waveshaper and stock distortions cover all three with the right curves.
Where it earns its keep
808s (harmonics make subs audible on phones), vocals (a parallel saturated copy 20% under the dry adds presence without EQ), drum bus (glue + attitude), and the master — a whisper of tape as the final coat.
Drive vs output
Every saturator gets louder as you drive it — and louder always sounds better. Match the output gain down so A/B is fair, then judge. Half your 'this sounds amazing' is often just +3 dB.
How much is too much
When transients smear and the mix gets 'small' behind a wall of fizz, you've crossed it. Saturate elements individually rather than nuking the master; several 5% coats beat one 50% slam.

What's the difference between saturation and distortion?
Same physics, different amount — saturation is distortion used gently enough to read as tone rather than effect.
Should I saturate the master?
A subtle amount (barely visible gain reduction, low drive) can glue a mix. If you can clearly 'hear it', it's too much for a master.
Why do my 808s disappear on small speakers?
No harmonics — pure sine subs vanish below a phone's range. Saturate the 808 so its 100–400 Hz harmonics carry the note.
