Layering 808s and Kicks Without Mud
The kick-808 relationship makes or breaks a modern beat. When it's wrong you get mud; when it's right the low end sounds like one huge instrument. The trick is giving each a different job.
Split the jobs
The kick owns the attack (50–120 Hz punch + a click up at 2–4 kHz); the 808 owns the sustain (30–60 Hz body). High-pass the 808's click off, or low-shelf the kick's sub tail down — they should overlap as little as possible.
Tune both
An untuned 808 fights every chord. Find your key (free detector), tune the 808 so its root notes match, and tune the kick's fundamental to the root or fifth. Suddenly 'mud' becomes 'power'.
Handle the overlap moment
When kick and 808 hit together choose one: sidechain the 808 to duck 30–60 ms under the kick, shorten the 808's attack so the kick pokes through, or clip the combined bus so the sum never spikes.
Glue and grit
Send both to one 'low' bus: gentle saturation (adds harmonics that make subs audible on phones) and one compressor with slow attack. Distorted 808s aren't a mistake — they're how they cut through on small speakers.
Check in mono, quiet
Low end problems hide at loud volume in stereo. Flip mono, turn it down, and listen: can you still feel the pattern? That's the pass/fail test.

Should the 808 be louder than the kick?
They should feel equal: kick wins the first 50 ms, the 808 carries after. If one disappears, rebalance the overlap, not the faders.
What frequency should I cut on an 808?
High-pass around 25–30 Hz to remove useless rumble, and consider a dip where your kick's punch lives (commonly 60–90 Hz).
Why do my 808s vanish on phone speakers?
Phones can't play sub frequencies — add saturation/distortion so the 808's harmonics (100–400 Hz) carry the note.
