Automation Clips in FL Studio: The Complete Beginner Guide

By HOPEX · Updated July 2026

A static beat is a demo; movement makes it a record. Automation clips move any knob over time — filters opening into drops, volume fades, pitch risers — and FL Studio's version is the best in any DAW.

Creating a clip

Right-click almost any knob → Create automation clip. It appears in the Playlist as an editable line: right-click to add points, drag them, and pull the little handle between points to curve the tension.

The moves that matter most

Four automations carry most modern beats: a low-pass filter opening over the 4 bars before a drop, a volume fade on the intro melody, reverb wet rising on the last snare before a section change, and a slow pitch rise on a riser sample.

Point types and stepping

Right-click a point to switch it to hold (jumps instead of glides — great for gated vocal chops) or enable step editing to draw per-bar steps for rhythmic volume cuts.

The hidden LFO

Every automation clip has an LFO: right-click a point → Articulator tools… or simpler, click the clip's arrow menu → LFO. Set speed to a beat fraction and you get wobble automation (auto-filter, tremolo) without a plugin.

Keep clips tidy

Name clips after what they control and keep them in a dedicated Playlist track section — a project with 30 unnamed 'Automation' clips is unfixable at 2 AM.

Häufige Fragen

Why is my automation clip not doing anything?

It's probably not linked anymore (the plugin was replaced), or the clip sits in a muted Playlist track. Re-create it from the knob to relink.

Can I automate third-party VST knobs?

Yes — tweak the knob first, then use Tools → Last tweaked → Create automation clip.

What's the difference between automation clips and event automation?

Clips are visual, reusable Playlist objects (use these). Event automation is recorded live knob movement stored inside a pattern — harder to edit.
