Why Your Vocals Don't Sit in the Mix (And 7 Fixes)
'It sounds pasted on top' and 'it's buried' are the same disease: the vocal and the beat aren't sharing space. These seven fixes are ordered — do the first ones first.
Make room in the beat
A vocal can't sit in a wall. Turn the main melody down 2 dB during verses, and mirror-EQ: dip the instrumental 2–3 dB around 1–3 kHz (where the voice lives) — a 'vocal hole' that costs the beat nothing.
Two compressors, each gentle
Serial compression beats one slammer: first comp catches peaks fast (2–4 dB), second smooths slow (2–3 dB). The vocal gets dense and steady without the choked sound of −10 dB on one unit.
Saturate for presence
A parallel saturated copy (or gentle tube drive) adds the harmonics that let a vocal cut through at lower volume — presence without shrillness beats +3 dB of bright EQ.
Shared space, not private reverb
Send the vocal to the same reverb/delay sends the beat uses. A vocal in its own room always sounds pasted on. Pre-delay 20–40 ms keeps words clear inside the space.
