Limiters vs Clippers: Loudness Tools Explained
Both tools stop peaks; they just disagree about how. Limiters push peaks down smoothly, clippers shave them off instantly — and knowing when to use which is a loudness superpower.
Limiters: the diplomat
A limiter is an ultra-fast compressor with an infinite ratio: peaks approaching the ceiling get turned down, and everything around them dips slightly too (that's the pumping you hear when pushed). Transparent for 2–4 dB; audibly breathing beyond.
Clippers: the guillotine
A clipper just cuts the waveform at the ceiling — no attack, no release, no pumping. The chopped edge becomes harmonics (distortion), which on drums reads as punch and attitude rather than damage.
Why clippers win on transients
A snare peak lasts 2 ms. A limiter turns the whole moment down to accommodate it; a clipper shaves the invisible tip and leaves the body untouched. Result: clipped drums sound louder and punchier at the same LUFS.
The classic combo
On the master: clipper first shaving 1–2 dB of drum peaks, limiter after doing 2–3 dB of clean catching. Each tool in its comfort zone beats either doing 5 dB alone.
Where the line is
Clip until the drums stop gaining punch and start fizzing — back off. Sustained material (vocals, pads) hates clipping; keep the clipper where transients dominate (drum bus, master with drum-heavy music).

Is clipping bad for audio?
Uncontrolled clipping at converters, yes. Intentional soft/hard clipping inside the mix is a standard modern technique — most loud rap and EDM masters are clipped.
Should the limiter be the last plugin?
Yes — ceiling at −1 dBTP, nothing after it except metering.
Why does my master pump?
The limiter is doing too much broadband work. Shave peaks earlier (clipper, per-bus control) so the limiter only catches 2–3 dB.
