FL Studio Mixer Routing Explained (Inserts, Buses & Sends)
The mixer looks scary until you learn one idea: audio flows from channels into insert tracks, and you can point any track's output anywhere. That's routing — and it unlocks grouped processing, cleaner mixes and sidechaining.
Channels vs insert tracks
The Channel rack holds your instruments; the mixer's insert tracks are where their audio gets processed. Select a channel and press Ctrl+L to link it to the current insert. Until you do this, everything piles into the Master — which is why beginner mixes feel unmixable.
Buses: group before you mix
Route all drum inserts into one empty insert (select them, right-click the destination insert's routing arrow → route to this track only). Now one fader controls the whole kit, and one compressor can glue it. Standard buses: drums, 808/bass, melodies, vocals.
Sends: one reverb for everything
Instead of a reverb on every track, put one big reverb on a spare insert, set it to 100% wet, and raise the small send knob from each vocal or melody track to it. Every element now lives in the same room, and you tweak the space in one place.
Sidechain routing
Right-click a routing arrow and choose sidechain to this track to feed a signal into a compressor without hearing it — that's how the kick ducks the 808 in proper sidechaining.
A clean default layout
Kick → 1, snare/clap → 2, hats → 3-4, 808 → 5, melodies → 6-9, vocals → 10-13; buses on 90+ so they sit apart. Save it as a template and every project starts organised.

What does Ctrl+L do in FL Studio?
It links the selected channel to the currently selected mixer insert, so the channel's audio flows through that insert's effects and fader.
What's the difference between a bus and a send?
A bus replaces a track's normal output (all drums → one drum bus). A send is an extra copy — the dry track still plays, and a portion also feeds a shared effect like reverb.
