FL Studio Lagging? 10 Ways to Fix CPU Overload & Crackling
Crackles, the underrun counter climbing, playback stuttering right when the idea was getting good — CPU overload kills sessions. These ten fixes are ordered by how much they help.
Buffer length first
Audio Settings → increase buffer to 512 or 1024 samples. Higher buffer = more latency but far fewer crackles. Track with a low buffer, mix with a high one.
Turn on the multithreading options
In Audio Settings enable multithreaded generator processing and multithreaded mixer processing. On modern CPUs this alone can halve the load.
Smart disable
Options → Audio → Smart disable turns off plugins when they're silent. Enable it globally, then use Tools → Macros → 'Switch smart disable for all plugins'. Free performance, zero downsides for most plugins.
Freeze the heavy stuff
That Serum patch with 7 unison voices? Right-click its Playlist clip region → Consolidate (or record it to audio). Audio playback costs almost nothing; synthesis is what hurts.
Find the actual culprit
The mixer's plugin list shows a small CPU meter per plugin (toggle in the plugin wrapper). It's usually one reverb, one softsynth with huge unison, or an oversampled saturator ×16. Replace, bounce, or reduce quality settings while producing.

Why does FL Studio crackle only when recording?
Recording needs a low buffer for latency, which stresses the CPU. Freeze background tracks before recording, or use direct monitoring on your interface.
Does more RAM fix FL Studio lag?
Only if you use huge sample libraries. Crackling under load is a CPU/buffer issue, not RAM.
Is 4GB RAM enough for FL Studio?
It runs, but you'll bounce to audio constantly. 16GB is a comfortable modern baseline.
