Autotune Settings Explained: Natural, Hard, or T-Pain
Autotune isn't one effect — it's a range from invisible pitch help to full robot, controlled by a handful of settings. Here's what each knob does and where to set it for each style.
The key is the key
Autotune corrects toward the notes you allow. Set the actual key/scale of the song (detect it with a key finder) — 'chromatic' lets the tuner pull to wrong neighboring notes and causes the classic sour warble.
Retune speed: the style dial
How fast pitch snaps to target. 0–5: instant snap = the hard T-Pain/trap effect. 10–25: modern rap's audible-but-musical tune. 40–80: transparent correction for R&B/pop where nobody should notice.
Humanize & flex-tune
Humanize relaxes retune speed on long held notes (keeps vibrato alive) — raise it if sustained notes sound frozen. Flex-tune only corrects when the singer commits toward a note, leaving expressive slides untouched.
Formant and throat
Formant preserves the voice's character when pitch moves; shifting it manually makes voices bigger (down) or brighter/chipmunk (up). Subtle formant-down (+ hard tune) is a big part of the modern melodic-rap tone.
Warble troubleshooting
Warble = wrong scale notes enabled, noisy/reverby input, or doubled voices tuned identically. Fix the key first, feed the tuner a dry signal, and de-tune doubles slightly from each other.

What retune speed for the hard Autotune effect?
0–5 with humanize at 0 — instant snapping is the effect. Sing slightly off-pitch slides to hear it jump.
Why does my Autotune sound bad?
Nearly always the wrong key set. The tuner drags notes to a scale the song isn't in and everything sounds seasick.
Can Autotune fix a truly off performance?
It corrects pitch, not timing or tone. A confident take slightly off-key tunes beautifully; a timid take stays timid at perfect pitch.
